Maart
studied double bass from the age of thirteen going on to Huddersfield
school of music, before becoming a professional musician in
1976.
After playing various instruments in a number
of folk groups, and briefly working as a chef in the Shetland
Isles feeding oil workers, he finally took up regular musical
employment with one of his favourite bands, Fairport Convention,
in 1985. From here he also branched out to the world of rock
as the keyboard player (he had two weeks to learn the new instrument)
with Jethro Tull.
Maart recorded and toured with Tull throughout
Western and Eastern Europe and North and South America from 1988
to 1991.
After
leaving Tull, he continued with the Fairports as well as playing
on countless other folk artists' albums until 1996 when, approaching
a mature forty years of age, he decided to leave behind at least
some of the rigours of the road to spend more time with his family
and to pursue the varied musical projects which now occupy his
time. He continues to tour and perform in concert with a number
of different acts and is, doubtless, currently appearing at a
theatre near you.
